X-Men: The Last Vestige of my Dignity being shredded!

A while back I posted about whether or not X3 was gonna suffer from too many characters. What it actually suffered from was a horrible script, a shitty director and Marvel not giving enough of a shit to make a quality movie. Brian Singer, good - Brett Ratner -BAD. Listed below are just a small handful of things that I found disgusting about this movie. There are plenty more. The dialog was as bad as the govern-ator in Batman & Robin.

Here are 2 examples

"I'm the Juggernaut, Bitch" & "Not everyone heals as fast as you, Logan"

Don't go to the theater, don't put it on your Netflix cue, don't go to Blockbuster, hell don't even watch it on TNT when they play it 75 times in one weekend.

This movie is feces!!

1. When you have a sucessful franchise - whatever it takes keep the writers and director.

2. Creepy kids are not cool - especially the one from UltraViolet

3. Don't fuck with the characters. Psylocke didn't use a psychic dagger the whole movie. She did walk through a wall, but not a shadow and have purple hair, but no psychic dagger. Everytime she appeared in the comic...it would talk about that damn dagger.

4. Don't create new characters when there are plenty to go around. Who was the lava breathing guy and porcupine face?

5. You want to end a franchise so you kill of people??? Who decided that and why are they on the payroll.

6. Don't make up shit about the characters. There are over 30 years worth of stories to pull from. Multiple Personality Disorder - my ass. What happened to Piotor's Russian accent?

As an X-Men fan since the 80s, I have to wonder if there are going to be far too many characters in the latest installment. Check out this line up:

Good Guys: Professor X, Wolverine, Storm, Jean Grey, Beast, Rogue, Iceman, Shadowcat, Angel, Moira MacTaggart, Cyclops, Colossus, Multiple Man, Siren, Jubilee

Bad Guys: Magneto, Mystique, Pyro, Juggernaut, Psylocke, Omega Red, Callisto

Undetermined: Leech, Stacey X

First and foremost.....Psylocke a bad guy?!?! What the fuck is up with that. I know that what I have read online may or may not be true, but the pic I saw put her with Callisto and Stacey X. That brings me to my second WTF moment....Stacey X - Could they have picked a more inconsequential character to add? Why not add Maverick or the X-CUTIONER? I want to see the movie, I will go see the movie, but I think they are trying to pack far too many characters in and there will be little to no character development aside from what has been done in the past 2 movies. I need to see a good treatment done to my 2 favorite characters: Colossus and Psylocke. But by making Betsy a bad character starts to fuck that up. Plus.. they have picked an Asian actress to play her. Unless they are starting from the Kwannon story line...Betsy was from England and looked pretty European to me.

We'll just have to wait and see what they do with it.

Underworld: Evolution

Just got back from seeing Kate Beckinsale's latest cinematic romp. As a fan of the first film, I had expectations as to what I was expecting from this movie. Generally sequels are pretty scary territory being that if the first film was good enough to elicit a sequel then the second film should be as good if not better than the first one. Spiderman, X-Men, Kill Bill fall into the good sequel category. Ghostbusters, Grease, Rocky Horror Picture Show fall into the what were they thinking category. Underworld Evolution falls somewhere in between. It wasn't horrible, it wasn't great and it wasn't a total waste of money.

Trailers were good...X-3, Silent Hill, UltraViolet and a piss poor showing of Final Destination 3. That's right folks...a trilogy.

Once again we were taken to the world where there are no halogen or fluorescent bulbs in lights...just some weird blue lighting that covers everything. Again, Selene was in her vinyl cat suit. Michael Corvin was still a hybrid thing and still the Lycans weren't the best in CG. So with all that being the same, what could they have added? How about some hot vampire on hybrid action, how about a new fighting tactic where your opponent gets his lower jaw ripped off. The coolness of the movie was that it picked up right after the fist movie ended. Selene still covered with Victor’s blood and Michael not fully aware of the predicament he is in. The story wasn't too bad; there were some gaps but not too bad. Not a whole lot of dialog but plenty of violence. All in all I'd say it's about a 3.5 out of 5. Will buy it when it comes out on DVD but wouldn't go see it in the theater again.

My scathing letter to WSMV

In a move that is tantamount to nothing more than censorship, I am appalled at your decision to cease broadcasting “Book of Daniel”. After watching the first episode last week, I was more than pleasantly surprised to see a show that was brilliantly written and acted with love and care for the characters and the struggles they were going through. I can understand if NBC as a whole felt it necessary to pull the show or not broadcast the show at all, but I don’t understand why an NBC affiliate feels they have the right and power to censor what I view. The show was funny, entertaining and through out all the hype taught many important lessons about tolerance and acceptance on a base human level.

I am embarrassed to live in one of the south’s fastest growing communities and have pressure applied by zealots to hamper my television viewing. I didn’t think in an area that requires diversity to survive this type of harassment would be tolerated, but again… I stand corrected. By caving to the wants and needs of the people doing the “bullying”, what about the rights and privileges of the rest of us? With cable and satellite systems broadcasting more than 150 channels, if someone did not want to watch the show; they had a choice and could change stations. You however have taken my ability to choose away by taking the show off the air.

In closing, thank you WSMV-TV and thank you Elden Hale, Jr., Senior Vice-President of Meredith Broadcasting and General Manager of WSMV-TV for making my mind up and telling me what I can and can’t watch.

Canceled TV & Brokeback Mountain

In the recent outbreak of television networks clamoring to get their TV shows online for the masses to run out and download (for a fee, of course), I think they have forgotten about a huge arena for profit.

Let's say there is a show that got canceled, mid-season and the network had already produced all the episodes in that season (see WonderFalls). Let's say there are people out there that enjoyed the show (see Firefly). Let's say there is a show that didn't get a fair chance due to shitty network scheduling (see Eyes). Let's say instead of optioning off the episodes to a TV station in New Zealand - nothing wrong with New Zealand, you put these shows online for people to download, at a fee of course. You weren't going to do anything with the episodes anyway...it's not like they were going to be picked up in syndication or released on DVD (see Birds of Prey), unless you are Firefly or WonderFalls.

Go ahead and option the series to Poland or the Ukraine...but give the people that did enjoy the show the option to see it as well. All you're out is a little server space and you get to make money off an otherwise dead show.

Road trip to Brokeback

I know that header is kind of misleading, but what they hey...I used most of my wit in the previous post. We went to see Brokeback Mountain this weekend as it finally opened in Nashville. I know what you are thinking, it's a semi-indie film about gay cowboys eating ice cream, and of course you were going to see it. So yeah, I did fall into that hole but still we did go see it and I can tell you...It was a pretty damn good movie. I think everyone who can grasp a movie that the title doesn't start with National Lampoons or American Pie should go see this movie. The theater was packed, understandably so considering only on theater in Nashville actually got it and that was the Green Hills Theater, but we made due. The story was enough to make you not realize how packed the theater was. Again, I can see you are thinking...how can the story keep you enthralled when it was based off a 15 page short story? Details my friends, think about it... the screenwriters didn't have to cut a thing out to conserve on time. They fleshed out several conversations - even though the entire dialog in the movie was in the story, gave light and images to scenes to give a better visual representation. It was worth the drive to the theater, it was worth the money and it was all and all a great time.

No Christmas in Whoville

For the first time in seven years, there will be no Christmas in Whoville. It wasn't stolen by the Grinch or exploited by capitalism, it just never showed up. Every year Christmas has been something special in our house. Our living room decked out like Charlie Brown and Rudolph both exploded, seven foot prelit Christmas tree with each branch over stocked with ornaments that have been collected over the years, a 45 piece Victorian Christmas Village with "real" lighted trees and candles in all the windows of the buildings, stockings hung by the tv with care; but not this year. Christmas has turned into just another day - a day with it's own commercials and tv specials but another day nonetheless. I guess it's hard to be jolly when you are bordering of financial disaster. This is the first year that I can remember in a long time that I haven't been able to buy gifts for my family and I think that is where some of the major bummed out comes from. So with that being said, I hope that your Christmas is good and I hope that Santa brings you what you want.

Narnia

I have seen quite a few adaptations of stories from one medium to another, be it book to screen, stage to screen, tv show to screen or video game to screen. Hell, I've even seen role playing game to screen; but never have I seen a movie that has captured the memories and imagery that I have in my head like The Chronicles of Narnia has. From the inside of the wardrobe to the frentic battle between good and evil, this movie was everything that I wanted and then some.

It's been probably 15 years since I had read the book but the images were still very clear. There were a few scenes that made me bleary eyed and made my heart hurt a little from the cinematic beauty and I can say that I am very much waiting for the release on DVD so that I can watch it over and over.

I know that alot of people that weren't fans of the show would probably shy away from the movie, but I say...Don't. Go see it, you will not be lost or confused in the least bit. The story was good, the cinematics were clean and crisp and the over all feeling of the movie was great. The only thing I missed was the theme song.

Sings..."You can't take the sky from me......"

River as amazing. I really thought she shined in the movie. Loved the banter between Mal and Jayne. Zoe is a hard woman. Kaylee was adorable as ever. Inara was beautiful (loved her crossbow). Wash was funny and sexy (has always been my favorite character). Book was wise as ever. Glad to see Simon grow a set and stand up.

This weekend was nothing more than sitting in front of the TV doing nothing. We finished Roswell Season 3, watched StarGate(s) and then watched 3 extremely different movies.

Straight-Jacket: A spoof on 50's comedies starring Rock Hudson. It was a pleasantly surprising movie. The visuals in the movie were stunning. The colors were vibrant and exciting - very Brini Maxwell. The cinematography was very 50's, no quick camera changes but lots of long sweeping shots. For an indie film, I was overall impressed. The matte paintings of the 50's for exterior shots were replaced with CGI. Matt Letscher plays Guy Stone, Hollywood's most eligible bachelor who happens to get caught with his pants down (literally) and is forced by the Movie Studio to marry Sally (played amazingly by Carrie Preston) to save his career and their investment. Life is fine, well as fine as a big flaming mo married to a ditzy blonde could be, until Guy meets Rick Foster, a novelist (played by Adam Greer) whose novel Blood Mine has been adapted into a major motion picture starring Guy Stone. All I will tell you is that hilarity ensues as well as a poignant love story.

Naked Fame: A documentary about Porn Star cum Pop Singer, Colton Ford. The advertisement for the movie talked about the rocky road to pop stardom as well as exposing the seedy underbelly of "gay club life". If the heinous acts they were describing were one guy passing out from an overdose of GHB and Blake Harper getting pissy for having some guy in the club sticking his had down Blake's pants, then they succeeded. As far as documentaries go, it wasn't bad. Colton's vocals are as hot as his body, but I could have absolutely done without all the whining and crying done by former porn star turned complete asshole, Kyle Neven. I think the casting director could be heard in the background saying, "And the part of petty, whiny jealous bitch will be played by Kyle Neven". I wish Colton all the best, I hope that he has some success crossing over into the mainstream world. IF not, I'll be right there waiting on his big comeback video.

Kung Fu Hustle: Another "hit" (pun intended) by Stephen Chow. This one, in my opinion, was much funnier than Shaolin Soccer and would possibly have stronger market appeal. The story is about the troubles the residents of Pig Sty Alley have with the Axe Gang once Sing (Stephen Chow) shows up. The movie is far from realistic, but that's what makes it fun. Watching Landlady splat into the billboard or Sing's Buddha falling from Heaven technique are great.

The joys of Claudia Black

Throughout the entire run of Farscape, I loved Aeryn Sun. I enjoyed Claudia Black as much as her character. Her character kept the stories gritty at times, and at other times you left feeling emotionally drained. So...one of my most favorite episodes of Farscape was john Quixote. The ep was well written, the story was brilliant and the acting was spot on. Claudia got to shine and show that she had an absolute comic genius hiding under the leather Peace Keeper uniform. Her performance in that episode makes me laugh, as much as a drunken Giles, spouting "He's gonna kick your ass". There was a tremendous amount of sadness when the show left the air. Like losing a friend or a pet. Farscape was important to the sci-fi community. Aeryn Sun was important, and the Princess trying to steal John Quixote's heart was important.

So the summer round of the "New Sci-Fi" Friday started 3 weeks ago. Having been a fan of StarGate: Atlantis, we were excited about that starting again. The other 2 shows, SG-1 and Battlestar "Crap"lactica, I could care less about...until I found out the the ultra dreamy Ben Browder would be appearing on SG-1 (Battlestar...still crappy). Could I watch an entire show around the lust for one actor, we'd soon see. The first episode of the season started and there he was in all his dreamy-ness. No leather pants, but hey the SG-1 uniform would do. I came for Ben, met Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks; who is also Sex on Legs) and got a healthy dose of Vala, aka Claudia Black.

There she was again, clad in leather, looking ravishing. And guess what....funny. Not just funny but damn funny. Comic timing, delivery and conviction. She has it all.

Now 3 episodes down, all with heaping servings of Vala and I am a fan of this show as well. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it previously, but I am there now.

Never being one to listen to what critics say, we watched Alexander tonight. The Widescreen Director's Cut. All I can tell you is that was 3 hours of my life I can never get back. It just goes to further solidify in my mind that Colin Farrell can't act his way out of a paper bag and as much as I love Angelina Jolie....the best thing that I can say about her preformance is that if she was going for the most non-descript accent in all time, she nailed it. Val Kilmer....honestly, he hasn't done anything good since Willow - in my opinion. Basic plot outline...my father hates me, my mother is a murdering liar...so let me conquer the known world. I guess without Dr. Phil or Jerry Springer, people do all kinds of crazy things. Don't waste your time on this film. If you want a halfway decent epic...stick with Gladiator and if it isn't rerunning on Starz, go slumming and watch Troy. At least these 2 movies had a plot that drove you from beginning to end. And both had decent eye candy (Russell Crowe & Eric Bana)..

On a totally different note..finished Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince tonight.. All I can say is wow. J.K. Rowling has weaved one of the most fanciful stories that I have read in a long time. If you are reading the book right now...finish it quickly, you won't regret it. If you haven't started it, what are you waiting for. It just makes it harder to wait til the next one comes out and the next movie in November. If you have any suggestions on reading material, I am all ears.

3rd World Tech Support

So. I have been a loyal customer with Sprint for 6 years and I am currently under no obligation with them. Last Thursday, I called and gave a customer service rep a post dated check to pay my bill dated tomorrow. I go to use my cellphone this evening and my service has been interrupted. I have spent an hour on the phone with their Jamacian tech support and have gotten no where. I was assured that by using a post dated check my service would not be interrrupted. Now after an hour with "The Wailers", my service has not been restored and I am no better than when I called (except that I am extremely pissed off).

Whether it be poor training on Sprint's part, misinformation given to the customer in order to secure payment or what ever....this shit has got to stop.

Bearapalooza

So, we have decided that tomorrow we will be attending one of Nashville's premeire social gatherings of overweight homosexuals - Bearapalooza. Actually this is totally an excuse for me to be a total "star fucking" stalker. There is this musician, his name is...well we'll call him Kendall (maybe because it's his name) and I have a low level obsession with him. He is from NY and will be one of the performers at the event. He isn't a huge star...just an obsession. My whole goal in attending this is to get to say hello to him. Will let you know how things go when you pack hundreds of fat, hairy homos (I can say that cause I am one of them)in the same space with temps to reach 105 degrees (with the heat index).

You develop or become enveloped by them. You desire nothing more than to be a part of them. No matter what you do, or how old you are...There are cliques. From High School to your 9-5 office job; they are there. The people that you eat lunch with, the people that you dish with. I have recently become a troll on the outer limits of one of the most outlandish cliques I have seen...bloggers.

Yeah, I have a blog. I don't update it frequently. It's something that I do every now and then. I guess if I had more insight or if I could find some really important news that people need to see, I would have more entries. I assume that in some manner...it is a reflection of how lackluster my life is. I sit at my puter night after night waiting to see what unfolds in the lives of Jake (aka JockoHomo - http://www.jockohomo.com), Joe (aka Joe.My.God - http://joemygod.blogspot.com), Corey (aka OPIEBlue - http://www.opieblue.typepad.com) with bated breath. Maybe it's because they are living their lives and at times, it seems as I am just floating through mine.

All these guys know each other. They all have something to say and want people to say things to them. So until I find an opening to put my 2 cents in, I'll hover and live vicariously through this elite group of bloggers.

Good TV

For the longest time, I thought I was cursed. Any new show that came on that I enjoyed...got cancelled. Cases in point: Matthew Fox in Haunted, Dominic Purcel in John Doe, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Wonderfalls, Farscape.....trust me the list could go on and on. But this season, it seems as if the curse has worn off. And now, there are good shows that aren't in danger of being cancelled. Lost, Alias, Desperate Housewives, Gray's Anatomy (and on the bubble, Eyes). At this point, all I can say is thank the gods for the network execs at ABC for not being complete and total contrived assholes. So many of the other networks fell into the Reality TV trap and can't seem to get out. Hell, it seems they can't write a show that can help them...more cases in point: Joey, Life with Fran.

I just think the American public is smarter than most execs give them credit for. But then I look at the ratings for The Amazing Race, American Idol, The Donald Trump Show and I feel as if the country is sorely divided. Those people that crave intellectual stimulation while watching TV and the "Bubbas" that don't.

I guess I shouldn't say much, I mean there is that whole wrestling thing that happened. Don't get me wrong. I loved wrestling as much as the next gay fanboy that wanted to see hot, sweaty, buff men roll around in the ring. If you smell what I'm cookin'.

But I do think the public wants more. Intellegence is not something to be laughed at or squandered. I know that I want to feel as if I have accomilished something other than burning 4 hours a night watching TV. Let me learn something whether it's about medicine, social engineering or just unabashed smart humor.

I just don't think that's wrong.

so when in our lives did we stop running to get somewhere just because we could? when did the idea of stepping into grass barefoot become anxiety material? when did rain stop being a place to play and start being something that you hurry away from? did all this happen when you weren't looking? did it all become obsolete when your imaginary friend went on to be someone else's? when the monsters in the closet and under the bed left, did they take it with them?

so many things get taken away as you get older so the last vestiges of those that can be held on to should be kept so tightly guarded that they can never be taken from you. so the next time you are at the gas station and you are going to pay for your gas... don't walk - run. the next time you are taking your dog for a walk...don't be afraid of what lurks in the grass. and for the sake of all imaginary friends everywhere, splash through the rain puddles with no regard to your new shoes.

So just got back from seeing Sin City. I didn't have a preconceived idea about this movie because I never read the graphic novels. The only thing that I knew was that it was broken into 3 stories and that it was filmed mostly on green screen. What I can say about the movie was that it was pretty damn impressive. Sean didn't care for it, but I kinda thought he wouldn't. My blanket statement to cover the movie is this. If you liked Kill Bill, then you will probably like this. Visually impressive, impressive casting, stylish and smart the movie was an overall success in my opinion.

Now, I have been said that if a comic book gets turned into a movie, then we are going to see if to make sure that more comic books get turned into movies. This doesn't always work (Elektra, The Hulk), but generally there are more good movies that come out of this than bad.

Lastly....Marv is my hero.
